This panel brings together scholars with many years of experience in curriculum development in schools of public policy.

The panel chair is Steven Rathgeb Smith, of the American Political Science Association and Georgetown University.

In addition, Professor Peter John of Kings College London will give a presentation entitled, “Teaching the Political Economy of Public Policy.” He will discuss the development of his problem centred syllabus about using the tools of political economy to address key public problems of the world today.  He can also discuss his online quiz with learning materials that aims to skill up students in these basic skills.

The second presentation is by Professor Rachel Laforest who will give a presentation entitled, “Designing a Competency-based Curriculum for Policy Studies. The field of policy studies is changing and the pace of change is staggering. With technological advances, new knowledge is constantly being created — how you know is more important than what you know. We need to prepare our students for success in this new collaborative, dynamic, technologically driven, flexible 21 st century environment. Professor Laforest’s presentation details the restructuring of the Queens University MPA curriculum to use competencies as a frameworks.

In the third presentation, Professor Kent Weaver of Georgetown University will give a presentation entitled, “Curated Cases as a Teaching Tool.” Teaching cases are an important pedagogic tool in many professional education programs.  But case teaching is often discouraged by a paucity of published cases on topics that the instructor wants to cover.  This paper outlines how instructors can assemble materials from multiple sources to create "curated cases" with a much lower time commitment than what is required to create formal written cases.
