GENERAL OBJECTIVES, RESEARCH QUESTIONS AND SCIENTIFIC RELEVANCE
The objective of this ONSITE workshop is to bring together researchers working in the area of global transparency.
Transparency has long been celebrated as a cornerstone of accountable governance, ethical institutions, and informed citizenship. Yet, in recent years, the very concept of transparency has come under increasing strain. From political polarization and democratic backsliding to the complexities of armed conflict, digital surveillance, algorithmic governance, and global crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change, transparency is being both demanded and contested with new intensity.
We seek to examine how transparency operates—and evolves—when confronted with political, technological, organizational, and ideological tensions. The workshop aims to take stock of the current state of transparency research and stimulate dialogue across theoretical, normative, and empirical dimensions. Particular emphasis is placed on access to information, open government, and transparency policy.
The workshop will be comprised of research presentations and a series of breakout groups to explore opportunities for joint publications, other forms of knowledge mobilization, and possible grant collaborations.
