My name is Johanna Hornung and I am a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Bern, Switzerland, and the Technische Universität Braunschweig, Germany. In the past, I have studied and worked at universities in different countries, which has given me an understanding of different academic systems and cultures as well as traditions and approaches in public policy. I see this diversity as an opportunity, not an obstacle, to the development of the public policy community, and I perceive IPPA as representative of this view.
The main motivation for my candidacy is twofold: I am a proponent of inter- and multidisciplinary research in public policy because I am convinced that we have much to learn from neighbouring disciplines such as (social) psychology, sociology and even computer science. Relatedly, I am an advocate of new, emerging perspectives on public policy research that arise from these mutual exchanges. While innovations always have the potential to add a complementary perspective to our research programs, they also require further refinement and acceptance by the community. If I were to become a member of the IPPA College, I would encourage this acceptance and support the further development of new perspectives on public policy research.
