GENERAL OBJECTIVES, RESEARCH QUESTIONS AND SCIENTIFIC RELEVANCE
Quality education is at the heart of the global commitment to achieve sustainable development, as outlined in the fourth Sustainable Development Goal (SDG4) under the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development. This commitment emphasizes the need for inclusive, equitable, and quality education as a fundamental component of the broader sustainable development agenda. The traditional approach to education, guided by national policies and strategies, has evolved to encompass a shared responsibility among individuals, educational institutions, and governments (Amin et al, 2023). Furthermore, education for sustainable development has transcended national boundaries, engaging a multitude of stakeholders and educational spaces at community, national, and international levels. The intricate interplay between these stakeholders and levels in shaping educational policies for sustainable development demands in-depth exploration and understanding.
This workshop aims to delineate the overarching objectives, scope, and methodologies and will deliberate on policies designed at various scales to address educational challenges and innovate in the realm of education for sustainable development. The workshop's approach is multidisciplinary, inviting studies utilizing diverse research methodologies, including surveys, interviews, experimental designs, focus groups, document analysis, and presentations of pilot studies.
While traditional educational policies have been primarily formulated at the national level, the evolving landscape of education for sustainable development necessitates the engagement of a broader array of stakeholders across different levels. At the community level, local organizations and communities play a vital role in shaping educational experiences. At the national level, governments and educational institutions provide the framework and resources for education (Hamwy et al, 2023). Internationally, organizations like UNESCO are instrumental in promoting global cooperation in the field of education for sustainable development.
Despite the growing recognition of the importance of education for sustainable development and the increasing involvement of various stakeholders, there remains a gap in our understanding of the policy dynamics that shape educational policies for sustainable development in particular, and multi-scalar policy making in general. This workshop aims to address these gaps by facilitating discussions and research on how policies are formulated, implemented, and evaluated across different levels and by various stakeholders.
The overarching objectives of the workshop are to:
1. Discuss policies designed at multiple scales (local, national, and international) to address educational challenges.
2. Investigate innovative educational policies that can contribute to sustainable development.
Scope of the Workshop
The workshop will encompass a wide array of topics related to educational policies for sustainable development, including but not limited to:
1. National Education Policies: Examination of how national policies promote or hinder sustainable development through education.
2. Local Community Initiatives: Case studies on the role of local communities and organizations in shaping educational experiences.
3. South-South Cooperation: Exploration of global collaborations and initiatives to enhance education for sustainable development.
4. Policy Implementation: Analysis of the challenges and successes in implementing sustainable development policies at different levels.
5. Evaluation and Impact Assessment: Studies on assessing the effectiveness and impact of various policies on sustainable development goals.
