‘Attractive territories’

An attractive territory refers to a geographical, social or cultural space that generates positive interest and a desire to live, settle or invest there. It is a place perceived as offering advantages or qualities that attract and motivate individuals, groups or institutions. There are different ways to define an ‘attractive territory’: geographical and environmental contexts ; economic and social attractiveness ; accessibility and connectivity ; development projects and governance

Although a attractive territory is an asset for its inhabitants and its attractiveness, it also involves potential risks that can affect its sustainability and its social and economic balance. These vulnerabilities stem from excessive exploitation of natural resources, congestion of services and infrastructure, gentrification, land speculation, excessive tourist pressure and a lack of long-term vision. Taken together, these factors threaten the area's future.

The governance of an attractive territory must therefore be targeted to avoiding these risks. Stable political leadership, collective cooperation mechanisms coordinated planning, sustainable resource management and active citizen participation are essential if we are to maintain the balance between attractiveness and quality of life.

This summer school will look at the social and political construction of these attractive territories, the crucial issues that run through them, and the strategies, tools and instruments that help to govern them in an uncertain context. This year, for the tenth anniversary of the TMAP Chair, we will be hosted on the island of Groix in partnership with the Brittany Region. For a long time peripheral and/or forgotten, Brittany and its islands are now part of the attractive territories that welcome a growing number of diverse populations (working people, tourists, seasonal workers, retirees, migrants, etc.). Territorial attractiveness, which is often still sought after, can therefore prove contradictory, a source of tension and conflict at local level.

All exchanges will take place in French language.
