1.      Research Manager, Trust and Distrust in Multi-level Governance (duration: 6 years; UAntwerp Centre of Excellence GOVTRUST)

Supported by the Government of Flanders through the resources of the Special Research Fund (BOF), the University of Antwerp seeks candidates for the position of

Research Manager of the GOVTRUST Centre of Excellence on ‘Trust and Distrust in Multi-level Governance’

GOVTRUST is one of the 13 Centres of Excellence (COE), supported by the University of Antwerp as part of its “Excellence in Research” strategy. These Centres of Excellence perform cutting-edge and cross-disciplinary research at international frontier domains.

The newly established Centre of Excellence GOVTRUST will study in an interdisciplinary way the dynamics, causes and effects of trust and distrust between the political, administrative, judicial and societal actors involved in multi-level governance. To that end, the consortium will apply qualitative, quantitative and experimental research methodologies.

The GOVTRUST Centre of Excellence is a joint collaborative effort by the following disciplines and research groups: political science and public administration by the Politics & Public Governance research group (Faculty of Social Sciences), public law by Government & Law (Faculty of Law), communication sciences by the research group MIOS ‘Media, ICT and interpersonal relations’ (Faculty of Social Sciences), and behavioral economics by the Antwerp Center for Evolutionary Demography (ACED) of the Faculty of Business and Economics.

2. Postdoctoral position, Trust in Governance and Regulation in Europe (duration: 3 years; EU-funded H2020 project TiGRE)

The Research Group ‘Politics & Public Governance’ (PPG) of the Faculty of Social Sciences, the research group on ‘Government & Law’ (Faculty of Law) and the UAntwerpen Centre of Excellence GOVTRUST (University of Antwerpen) are looking for a

Postdoctoral researcher for the EU-funded Horizon 2020 project ‘Trust in Governance and Regulation in Europe’ (TiGRE)

Citizens’ trust in society’s organisations and political institutions in Europe and beyond has been put to the test by a number of high-impact events that directly relate to the functioning of governments. For example, the financial crisis, major recent data leakages and privacy-threatening behaviour by global digital players (Facebook, Google) and food scandals have created major threats for citizens’ trust in the way these societal sectors are governed and regulated by governments at different levels (EU, national, subnational). The EU-funded TiGRE (Trust in Governance and Regulation in Europe) project which is coordinated by the University of Lausanne (Martino Maggetti and Yannis Papadoupolos) studies the relationships between political, administrative and regulatory actors, as well as private actors and citizens and the role of trust therein. Sectors studied are financial and banking services, food safety, communication and data protection.  To that extent, the TiGRE project encompasses teams from 9 countries and will deploy different research methodologies. The UAntwerpen research groups ‘Politics & Public Governance’ and ‘Government & Law’, which are both active in the Centre of Excellence GOVTRUST, participate as partner in this research project, being involved in all work packages.

3. Postdoctoral position, Trust in government decision-making based on big data and artificial intelligence (duration: 2 years; BRAIN.be funded research project DIGIFED)

The Research Group ‘Politics & Public Governance’ (PPG) of the Faculty of Social Sciences and the UAntwerpen Centre of Excellence GOVTRUST (University of Antwerpen) are looking for a

Postdoctoral researcher for research project on ‘Trust in government decision-making, big data and artificial intelligence’ (as part of the DIGIFED project)

Governments increasingly use big data, artificial intelligence and algorithmic analytics in decision-making. But under which conditions do citizens and other actors trust such decision making? The UAntwerpen research groups ‘Politics & Public Governance’ and MIOS ‘Media, ICT and interpersonal relations in Organisations and Society’ are responsible for a work package on this topic as partner in the interuniversity DIGIFED project (coordinated by Prof. Joep Crompvoets KUL). The project is funded by the Belgian BRAIN.be research program (Belgian Research Action through Interdisciplinary Networks). The post doc researcher will also work within the context of the UAntwerpen Centre of Excellence GOVTRUST on ‘Trust and distrust in multi-level governance’, coordinated by Prof. dr. Koen Verhoest. You will be based in the research group ‘Politics & Public Governance’ at the Faculty of Social Sciences but will work intensively with the other research groups.
