The Johnson Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy (JSGS) will be organizing the 2018 CAPPA conference - Diverse Gatherings: Indigenous, Provincial, and Territorial (IPT) Innovations, between May 31 - June 1, 2018 at the University of Regina, Canada.

The Canadian Association for Programs in Public Administration (CAPPA) will hold its seventh annual Research Conference in Public Management and Policy in May 31 - June 1, 2018 at the University of Regina in Saskatchewan.

Theme

While opened to all areas of research, papers and panels related to this year’s conference theme are also welcome. This year’s conference will be held as part of the Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences (Congress), Canada’s largest gathering of scholars regrouping more than 70 associations. Building on Congress’ overall theme, "Gathering diversities | mâmawinitotân nanâtohk-ayisiyiniwa," CAPPA 2018 will explore the past, present, and future roles of provincial, territorial and Indigenous innovations in advancing public management, policy and governance in Canada.

Diversity has fostered innovation in public policy and governance throughout Canadian history.  Saskatchewan is well known for pioneering many of Canada’s policy innovations, including medicare, and for developing many of its most distinguished public servants. As the public sector continues to face new challenges, innovation remains essential to enable communities to thrive.

Potential areas of focus for proposals include:

- Innovative models in Indigenous, provincial and territorial administration and policy;
- Innovations in Canadian federalism and intergovernmental relations;
- Northern innovations in public administration, management and policy;
- The transfer of IPT innovations across domestic and international borders;
- Structures, processes and practices needed to foster greater innovation; and
- Collaboration and innovation in academic programming in public administration and policy.

Organization

The conference will promote formal and informal gatherings of scholars. In addition to the academic program, the conference will offer the rare opportunity to network informally at events organized in some of Regina’s unique cultural and historic spaces.

The Johnson Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy will host the conference. One of Canada’s largest policy schools, the School is a joint institution of the University of Saskatchewan and the University of Regina. This year, it is celebrating its tenth anniversary.
