The Multi-Actor Systems department of the Faculty Policy, Technology and Management and we develop theories, methods, and interventions to understand and transform complex socio-technical systems and their governance. Its research addresses grand societal challenges including climate change, energy and heat transitions, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, health, mobility, and resilient infrastructures. MAS combines social, natural, and engineering science perspectives, bridging constructivist approaches to actors and governance with positivist approaches to systems analysis and design. Its distinctive strength lies in integrating empirical governance research, participatory methods, simulation modelling, gaming, deep uncertainty analysis, and institutional design. Through interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary collaborations, MAS produces scientific insights, open tools, decision-support methods, and societal impact in partnership with public, private, and civil-society actors. Looking ahead, the department aims to strengthen conceptual and methodological foundations, increase cohesion across research lines, retain and develop talent, and enhance scientific and societal visibility while contributing to sustainable, secure, and just system change.
